The History of Ramen

Updated: Apr 30, 2020

Have you ever wondered where your bowl of steamy hot delicious Japanese ramen came from? Well I did so I decided to do research. It is not Japanese! Ramen came from China and got popular in Japan. We don’t know exactly who invented ramen but we do know it was made in China. We do not even know what part of China it came from. It is all a mystery! What we do know is that in the late 1800s immigrants from China introduced the Japanese people to ramen. The first bowls of ramen were much simpler that you know today. All that was in it was wheat noodles, broth and Chinese roast pork. In World War II Japan had the worst rice harvest in 46 years. They needed food so the USA sent Japanese people wheat because of the shortage of food. That is when ramen noodles became more popular in Japan because they were using the wheat to make ramen. Today you can choose from lots of different types of ramen. Some have eggs and vegetables. You can also have seafood or different types of meat to choose from. Ramen has become so popular in Japan there are 24,000 ramen shops today. If you eat at a different ramen shop each day then it would take you 6.5 years to eat at all the shops! Now you know where that steamy delicious bowl of ramen came from!

These are pictures of ramen shops in Japan. That is my grandfather Papa eating ramen at the world famous Ichiran Ramen in Japan.

I had Ichiran in New York City and I loved it. It is my favorite ramen in the world. I can not wait to try it in Japan someday!
