Sleeping in a 250 Year Old Windmill

When we made the decision to do this Round the World thing, a friend of Sarah's turned her onto a family called the 'Four Alaskans' who were in the home stretch of a year of travel. They have a great blog that we captured many ideas from, including this post on Hvar, Croatia. In it, they shared their story of staying in a restored windmill - see here on AirBnB.

Early Booking

We made our decision to uproot and travel with an aggressive 4 month timeline from decision to departure. In starting to nail down accommodations, this was one of the very first. It fit the unique experiences we are seeking during our trip.

"I Don't Get It"

When we reminded the girls last week that we'd be sleeping in a windmill, Sadie blurted out, "I don't get it." A reasonable answer for a six year old.

Arrival

After driving across the full 45 mile width of Hvar, a skinny island reachable by 30-min ferry from mainland Croatia, the excitement level from everyone in the family was high. It didn't disappoint...

Windmill History

The owners left some information on the history of the structure, here are cliff notes:

  • "Ruina di Molino a Vento" is the name of the structure

  • It was built in 1761 by Franciscans as a windmill

  • Since 1971, it has belonged to the Lorenzo Tudor’s family

  • It is now protected by Hvar Cultural Heritage, as a cultural monument

The Outside

Our curiosity was around the main structure, but we were thrilled with the outdoor space. It was perfect for the four of us to hang out and enjoy meals in the shadow of the unique structure.

Food & A Great Place to Share It

We don't know where we are going to live when we're done, but we do know this:

  • It will have an open kitchen (so we can hang out while cooking)

  • It will have outdoor space for eating and spending time with friends & family

It's what we do, thrive on...no matter where in the world we are!

Dinner time!
