Roadtrip to Greenlee Farm

Woke up in Byron Bay. Checked out of our AirBnb. School at the local library.

It was nearing lunchtime, but we decided to get a start and find the next town outside of Byron Bay for a bite. Google maps showed a small town with some eating options about 20 minutes out of town, Brunswick Heads.

Bunswick Heads It was a tiny town, with a bunch of neat shops and small restaurants. We opted for a Mediterranean place we passed by and then walked around town a bit.

Bruns Bakery was on the main corner, where we grabbed some classic Aussie meat pies that could make for a quick and easy dinner after arriving at our next stop. We each took great care in selecting our meat pies….

  • Paige - Mexican Chicken Meat Pie

  • Sadie - Spinach & Feta

  • Sarah - Sweet Potato & Spinach

  • Doug - Cauliflower & Broccoli

  • Family Extra Share - Curry Beef

Greenlee Cottages

After a top trip favorite recently at Curringa Farms, we were eager for our stay at Greenlee Cottages. This time we were staying inside a macadamia nut farm, surrounded by horse farms down the valley. There was also the promise of spotting koalas that are all over the area, but are notoriously slow moving and hard to see.

Excited to be here for the next three nights!

Robyn

We were greeted by Robyn. She and her husband Paul were formerly in the mining business, but abandoned it for a change of pace. In 1995 they found this plot of land, planted 500 macadamia nut trees and they were off.

We learned from Robyn that in September, they nearly lost the farm to one of the many fires that devastated the area. For a couple of nights, they were up fighting the fires with the help of neighbors to protect their house, the macadamia nut trees (highly flammable because of the high oil content) and the cottages.

In the end, they did it. Largely with the help of the Royal Fire Service who spent a couple of days setting back fires up on the top of the ridge above their farm.

It’s hard to believe looking around now with the green, but until a month ago they had been in a severe drought and everything was brown. After the fire, with the soaking rain, the green has sprouted all around. The biggest risk currently are mudslides as the second act of fire damage, but so far so good.

Meat Pie Dinner

They had a communal pizza oven and BBQ for guests, which we used to heat up our meat pies picked up earlier in the day.

Walking pies to the oven.

We brought them back to our cottage and ate them while enjoying what was to be our view for the next three days.

We went to bed feeling the RTW grove and excited for our three days at Greenlee Cottages!
