Road Trip to Freycinet Nat’l Park

We woke up in our ‘tiny house’ at the Big4 Holiday Park. We were leaving the Bay of Fires for the more well know Freycinet National Park, about a 1.5hr drive South along the coast.

February 16, 1996 Flashback

Before moving on with today's activities, it's worth noting that today is the 24 year anniversary of when Sarah and I officially started dating at Northwestern! Never would have thunk we’d being doing this together (with two girls) back in 1996. It’s been an amazing ride.

Slipped this note under Sarah's door on the morning of Feb 17th, 1996. This was found during the great purge of 2019 as we departed Manhattan.

Pancakes with Chloe & Mia

Back to 2020...the girls woke up, excited to spend some more time with their new Tassie friends. There was a pancake breakfast at the Holiday Park, where we met up with the girls and their parents. After chatting for a bit, the four girls went off to play for a bit while Sarah and I went back to our tiny house to finishing packing and load the car.

Fish & Chips

Our plan was to make our way down the coast and stop for a picnic lunch somewhere along the way. We pulled into the town of Bicheno and those plans changed when we saw a neat looking Fish & Chips shop.

Tasmanian Coastal Seafood didn’t disappoint. We got one order of a white fish they had on offer, two orders of salmon and a chips to split. As we placed the order, it became apparent that we were in for a treat when this exchange happened with the cashier.

Me: “The garlic aioli, is that spicy?”

Cashier: “It’s made differently everyday, no set recipe...so I’m not sure.”

The setting was beautiful. It felt like proper fish and chips nearly at the end of the Earth.

Big4 Holiday Park - Take 2!

We were booked again at a Big4 just on the outskirts of the national park. We were all excited after our experience the last two nights. This time we were in a two bedroom cabin, about the size of our former NYC apartment. It feels downright spacious after our tiny home.

Cape Tourville Lighthouse Walk

With the fast(er) pace we're moving at, we don’t always know what lies at our next destination. We hadn't done much research in advance on Freycinet National Park, but armed with some recos from the worker at the Big4, we headed out for a short 30min late afternoon hike.

We went along a board walk that circled the Cape Tourville Lighthouse and were treated to views high above and looking down on the Tasmanian Sea.

Sleepy Bay Track

Driving back down from the lighthouse, we saw a sign for Sleepy Bay and decided we had time to spare and that we’d give it a look. In a quick 10 minute walk, we were on a beach we’d seen while up on the lighthouse walk.

We spent about 45 minutes just hanging out. Paige and Sadie were immediately busy playing in the pebbled sand. Sarah and I bobbed in and out of playing with the girls and walking along the rocks.

Panning for gold?

Home Cooking

It was back to our cottage for a home cooked dinner. Sauteed rosemary chicken, white beans and chard. After a few months of 100% restaurant eating, we’re enjoying getting back into our family cook and eat groove.

White beans, chicken & chard. Enjoying some home cooking again!

Off to bed we went, bellies full and ready for a long hike in the park tomorrow...
