Raining Ravioli

Today was the first day of our trip that was a wash out. Rain, rain and more rain. It made for a relaxing day; here's how it went:

AM School Time

We spent a couple of hours on school work with Paige & Sadie. Sadie was mastering words with the "th" and "sh" sounds/spelling. Paige learned about homophones (and truth be told, I learned what they were too ;)).

This pic was taken a couple days earlier (thus no raincoats), but this was the spot.

Fresh Ravioli Run

After a quick lunch at the house, we drove into Amelia to pick up some fresh ravioli to have for dinner. This is Sunday in Italy, so we had to beat the clock, with the 1:00pm closing time. In fact, it's like a ghost town here on Sundays (this is our 2nd one) with almost everything closed - Sunday is really a family day in Italy.

We decided it would only be appropriate to try a bunch of different types of ravioli:

  • Meat & Zucchini

  • Ricotta & Pine nut

  • Ricotta & Spinach

  • Meat Tortellini (for Paige...steadfast in her desire to have nothing to do with cheese)

Gelato

It's simply not possible to stop in Amelia without stopping at Gelateria Girotti. My personal rule with sweets this trip is that I'll only indulge when it's part of the cultural experience. Gelato (in Italy) makes the cut!

Julia Child Stopped By

Paige and Sadie plopped down on the couch to watch their first non-plane movie of the trip, Julie & Julia. They were initially disappointed at first with the black & white cinematography, then quickly became engrossed.

March 2020 in New Zealand

Sarah, my Dad and I schemed on March 2020 itineraries to New Zealand, where he and Nan will be joining for part of our 3+ weeks on the island. We worked out some general ideas as a good starting point.

Time for the Ravioli

If watching Rocky gets you pumped to box, Julia Childs does the same for chefs. Paige and Sadie were excited to help out in the kitchen tonight as we prepared our ravioli feast. It was only appropriate to experiment with 4 different sauces for our various ravioli type:

  • Leek, Garlic & Butter

  • Rosemary, Garlic & Olive Oil

  • Burnt Butter & Sage

  • Pesto (store bought)

The girls have always enjoyed getting in the kitchen with me, but with more time like today I feel like I can really teach them some skills.

I intentionally let Sadie take a lead in the kitchen tonight. She was particularly excited for the burnt butter sage sauce.

Dinner is Served

In a great end to a lazy day, we sat down for an indoor feast surrounded by lightning and thunder.

Rain or shine...always eat well in Italy!

We made the most of the rain day, but we're excited to get outdoors again soon.
