One big aspect of life in Queenstown is enjoying all that Lake Whakatipu has to offer. We admittedly haven't done a ton out on the water here because we don't have any of the water-based "toys"/accouterments that make for maximum fun. Things like boats, "biscuits" (inflatables), wake boards, stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, etc. These past weeks we've been fortunate to get out on the water with friends and boy, what a treat!
Kelvin Heights Boat
We hit up Lake Whakatipu one Saturday morning with Paige's friend, Charlee, and her parents & dog Chip. We cruised over to Kelvin Heights Peninsula where we lounged away the day with all sorts of water fun. The girls couldn't get enough of "biscuiting" (being towed behind the boat on the inflatable seat). Doug tried wake boarding for the first time; multiple botched attempts, but ultimately made it up briefly. I was cruisey all around on the SUP and loved it.
Bob's Cove
Another weekend we headed over to Bob's Cove, about 20 minutes out of town, to meet up with one of Sadie's friends, Frieda, and her fam. Bob's Cove is a gorgeous spot nestled away from the road after a 15 minute walk. I'd been to Bob's Cove once before on a solo walk, but it was new for Doug & the girls. Such a good reminder that there's so much beauty at our Queenstown doorstep to explore! The girls swam, kayaked and made stone/dirt piles. We hustled up the Bob's Cove "knob" to enjoy the views from above. Look at that water! So clear (and chilly).
Paddle Boat
This particular day we met up with Sadie's friends (Amelia & Frieda) for an ice cream and play down by the lake in town. When the playdate ended I surprised the girls with us three going out on one of the paddle boat rentals. They rent for 20 minute increments. We were concerned that would be too little time out on the water, but literally 6 minutes in all three of us felt like we'd had enough of the experience :) Top-notch, stunning views all around. And to top it off, P&S plunged into the lake afterwards. Amazing afternoon!
We don't have any water "toys" yet (only land toys like camping tent/gear), but after a few stacked experiences like the above out on the water, I envision that changing this NZ Summer!
