Poor Knights Islands

Updated: Feb 8, 2021

Third time's a charm!

We've gone snorkeling two other times in our travels. Once off Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam and a second time in Bali, Indonesia. Our experiences were mixed.

Time to try our hand at snorkeling again. This time off the Poor Knights Islands. The marine reserve is considered to have some of the world's best scuba diving and snorkeling. We headed out with our "Team Tutukaka" crew of families for a full day's boat excursion called the Perfect Day.

After about 45 minutes transit, we arrived to the Poor Knights Islands and suited up for snorkeling. The waters were by no means warm, but thankfully completely tolerable with wet suits. Not having to contend with frigid waters made for an easy transition into the water. The boat had great gear for us to use including full wet suits, flippers, masks and snorkels. They even had really cool floating devices (similar to a boogie board) where you could lay on top and look down into the water through a viewing window.

All four of us enjoyed the snorkeling. Best family snorkeling experience we've had, hands-down. Not one stinging jellyfish in sight. Phew! Loads of fish and coral, colorful, different sizes. We saw a few large kingfish under the boat, which was cool. Didn't have an underwater camera, so you'll have to take my word for it :) Sadly we ran out of time and didn't get to use the stand-up paddle boards or kayaks to explore further.

On the way back to shore we went through some sea caves.

Great day out on the water with Team Tutukaka!
