One of the things Paige & Sadie may remember most from our days at Curringa Farm is that they got to “drive” for the very first time! :)
Doug’s been our fearless driver in Australia and is doing an awesome job driving on the left side of the road. The drive from the entrance to Curringa Farm and our Boobook cabin is a good 3+ km. It’s a wide dirt lane the whole way, with grass fields and sheep on either side. No other cars or traffic to contend with.
It started with Paige asking if she & Sadie could sit in the front seat on the drive to the cabin. Clearly nothing we normally allow, in the remoteness of a Tasmanian sheep farm, we said, “Sure!”. The girls gleefully bound up into the front seat together and didn’t stop smiling the whole way.
Then, Paige upped the ante and asked if she could help Doug drive. Doug let Paige manage the steering wheel, leaning over from the passenger seat. Sadie got a turn too. They loved it. Doug then spontaneously said that they could sit on his lap next time and take over the steering wheel. They were elated!
Not to be told she can do something & let us forget, the next time we made that 3km stretch in the car, Paige insisted it was her turn to drive! She plopped down on top of Doug’s lap and - with Doug’s hands a safe, short distance away - Paige took over! Halfway to reception, the girls swapped places and Sadie had a turn behind the wheel. The girls were in hog heaven! It was amusing to see them super concentrated and equally starting to veer off the road as they learned how responsive the car is to their turning of the wheel.
“Driving” was a highlight for the girls, and I have no doubt they will remember their first time behind the wheel! And in an awesome gold car in the Tasmanian hinterland of Australia, no less :) If they do forget, good thing we’ve got photographic & audio visual evidence to jog their memories!
