Earlier today on our tour of Curringa Farm and its sheep shearing operations, Sophie told us about a bush walk just near our cottage. She suggested early morning and early evening as the best time to explore, as it's when the animals are out & about.
Bush Walkers
About an hour before dusk we headed over to the bush walk "trail". I use the term very loosely because it was really just a gate on one end, the lake on another and you were all on your own :) Our antenna were up from minute one, ready & excited to see animals doing their thing.
Cockatoos
At first the only signs of nature we saw or heard were the literally *hundreds* of cockatoos flying overhead and perching in trees, squawking noisily. They were sulphur-crested cockatoos, quite large and predominantly white in color, with a yellow (sulphur-yellow) crest; hence their names. It was amazing to see and hear so darn many.
Wallaby Central
Before long, we lucked out and saw our very first wallabies! Wallabies are marsupials, just like kangaroos, but smaller than kangaroos. They're native to Tasmania and roam all over the place (as we would come to discover during our 10 days through Tassie). We stayed still and quiet to get the best look at a dozen or so wallabies hopping around us. So cool!
Sun Down
As the sun started to creep down and the light change, we headed back to our cottage to enjoy the rest of the evening. Fun to clock our first Australia bush walk and see legit Australia wildlife!
