We made our decision to do a family gap year of travel, and went full-steam ahead into planning mode.

Curious about what we needed to do in those four months to be ready for our year of travel? Here's a sample (but definitely not comprehensive!) list:

  • Give notice to leave our apartment

  • Unload all our stuff (donations, stoop sale, storage)

  • Plan said family trip around the world (no small feat!)

  • Create a packing list and purchase everything

  • Spend as much time as possible with our NYC friends before we leave

  • Get vaccinations

  • Get new passports with additional pages

  • Research homeschooling programs

  • Research visa requirements for all countries

  • Determine health & travel insurance needs

  • Buy flights

  • Set up LastPass for password management

  • Unsubscribe from every possible catalog/mailing

  • Sign P&S up for airline frequent flier accounts

  • Do in-classroom travel projects with the girls & their classmates

  • And so much more…

This would not have been possible without:

  • Great teamwork: S&D striking the right balance of collaboration vs dividing tasks

  • Trello: an organization platform we used to keep things unscrambled

  • Sarah’s unmatched organizational and knock-it-off-the-list skills

  • Doug’s introduction of agile project management, learned from years at work

  • Task Rabbit: hiring muscle to help around the apartment

There’s still a lot we’ll need to do from the road as-we-go, but for the most part we’ve got the big stuff under control or completed. Let's do this!

Grand Central for planning. Many late nights at our kitchen table figuring this thing out.
