Time to scram from the South Island!
We've been on the South Island since March 11th. Time to start exploring the North Island as part of our Summer 2020 road trip.
We had a 2 hr drive from Nelson to Picton to catch the ferry. The timing worked out to stop for an early lunch in Havelock, the "Greenshell Mussel Capital of the World". Green mussels are huge and not our favorite, but it was well worth the experience at the Mussel Pot restaurant to stop in for a combo of grilled mussels, steamed mussels and a few other bites.
The ferry was a massive operation. It reminded us of our last big ferry experience, overnight from Italy to Croatia. We queued for a while to get our car parked in a lower berth and then snagged a seat near a window. The ferry itself is about 3.5 hours. Fun fact: as the crow flows, you're actually going due East/West between the two NZ islands, not North/South!
Mishap at Magician Show
At one point they had a magician show; the guy Nigel has been doing the show for 31 years! I went with the girls to check out the show & stood in the back. About half way through the swells got larger and my stomach wasn't loving the ups & downs. I texted Doug that it was time to swap places. When the show ended Doug came back with a bummed looking Sadie. Turns out with the swells some kid next to her got sea sick and some of the sick spewed onto Sadie's pants/socks. Yuck!
