After a glorious day of bike riding, we rode head-first into a night market at the edge of the national park. So many of the amazing experiences we have had this year have smacked us in the face unplanned. This was one of them.
First, The Food
We were taken by the food immediately. No one does street food/market food better than the Thai people; it's part of their culture. Those NYC street markets that traverse the city during the Summer and Fall months should be ashamed of themselves.
Our bikes were due back at 5:00pm and it was 4:45pm. Even though we weren't hungry for dinner, we decided we were going to stay. We returned our bikes just a few minutes away and we were back.
The Scene
The market was on a lake in Sukothai Historical Park. The Park is the reason tourists come to Sukothai, but surprisingly 90% of the people walking the market were Thai; a good sign. There were mats and small tables set up where families and people were around enjoying their food and the view.
The Cost
The majority of things we ate were 20 Thai Baht (.60 cents USD). Nothing competes with Southeast Asia on value to experience. Nothing, nothing!
"Mommy, I Want to Remember this Forever"
We enjoyed the market so much, after our second day of biking we were back. While we were eating and enjoying the sunset, Sadie turned to Sarah and said these words. They're some of the most memorable of the trip so far.
Bonus...
One of the main groups of temple ruins was just a a few hundred yards from the market. When the sun went down, they turned the spotlights on and we were once again treated to the unexpected. We strolled through, once again amazed that we seemingly had such a magnificent place to ourselves.
Collectively, we feel like we've hit a sweet spot in our travels.
