First stop on the Global Subway road trip to the Otago Peninsula . . . the Moeraki Boulders!
The Moeraki Boulders are a group of spherical "boulders" (concretions) that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs. The beach abounds with them (50+), scattered around in clusters and isolated ones.
Thanks to a tip from my parents (who had visited Moeraki years prior and highly recommended it), we made a point of checking the tidal charts before we visited. Thankfully our planned visit timed nicely to be just before low tide. Wanted to make sure we could actually see the boulders :)
We didn't have the place to ourselves by any means, but fair to say there were significantly far less people admiring the boulders than there would be normally, especially on such a beautiful Fall day. Within minutes the girls had abandoned their shoes & socks and were frolicking around the boulders and near the water's edge. We found a few pieces of large driftwood to squat on for our picnic lunch, and then went further down the beach to explore more of the boulders and snap some pictures. Moeraki was a unique, gorgeous spot for our picnic lunch & some great outdoor play!
Great video compilation of our time at Moeraki Boulders by Doug:
** Postcard update: We mailed our first batch of postcards since mid-March! Exciting times, folks! A small sign that the Global Subway is in motion again. These messages from the girls to family members are just the best.
We had a further 1.5 hour drive from Moeraki to get to our overnight destination. I spotted a local brewery called Arc Brewing Co. about half way along our route, and we popped in for a look. We knew it was a long shot but we were hoping they might have a Gose or Sour beer on tap for us to buy for takeaway. Sadly they had none, but the space was so inviting that we stuck around; we bought one Saison pint and shared it. Even Sadie remarked "This is the most beautiful beer place I've ever seen!". As enjoyable as it was, it was also totally surreal to be out in a public social setting, something that has been absent from all of our lives for so long. The brewery had a decent amount of people lingering over a beer, socializing with friends. It was great to see a local business up & running and being supported.
