Lighthouse in Nelson

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

In Nelson we went to visit a lighthouse and you would book a ticket and go on a speed boat for 15 minutes. It was a really fun experience and I would really recommend it for anyone who passes through Nelson. Here are some things my family liked about the lighthouse.

I love light houses! I thought it was so neat to visit a lighthouse and climb all the way to the tippy top! It was amazing to speak with a real life lighthouse keeper! Our boat driver was a reliever (substitute) lighthouse keeper and was sent to a few different lighthouses all around NZ, including some on the South Island. I also loved seeing all the old pictures at the lighthouse showing what life was like there for the keeper and his family over 100 years ago. Such a fun excursion!

I really liked the boulder bank that the lighthouse was on. I enjoyed learning from the boat driver about New Zealand lighthouses.

The views were stunning and the lighthouse was really cool! Also it was really fun walking up the stairs and seeing the levels.

This lighthouse is the second oldest lighthouse in New Zealand! It is over 100 years old!

The lighthouse was made in England and sent to NZ in a bunch of pieces to put together in 1862!

The only way to get into the light house is on a kayak tour or going on the ferry like we did because you need a key to get in!

It stopped being a lighthouse 1982!
