Kākāriki Sadie

Kākāriki is not only the name of one of the most common species of parakeets in New Zealand, but also the name of Sadie's school netball team! The birds' Māori name means "small parrot", kākā (parrot) + riki (small). They're bright green in color.

The netball season for Sadie's age group was super short & sweet. The team only practiced together three times ahead of their tournament. It was the first time playing netball for all the girls, as their age group is the official start of NZ's youth netball program.

Nothing but net for Sadie :)
Year 3 & Year 4 netball teams practicing at school one afternoon. Sadie is third in from the right!

Their brief netball season culminated in a round-robin tournament at the Queenstown Events Center this morning. They played three games against local schools Shotover Primary, Remarkables Primary School and St Joseph's. Games were 2x7 minute halves with a 1-minute break.

Guess who scored the first goal (point/basket) in the first minutes of the first game?! Sadiebear!! Doug was lucky enough to catch the big moment on film :)

Sadie played Attack (the only position that can shoot goals) the majority of the time; she was really comfortable hustling to the goal ring & shooting. Time to brag . . . Sadie scored two of the total three goals their team scored over the course of the morning. Proud of her!!

QPS Kakariki. Way to give it your all, girls!

Bummer it was such a crazy short "season", but it was great to get Sadie introduced to the game and playing on a team. And she absolutely loved it! She's already said she'll be back in 2021 :)
