I'm Going to Watch the World Go By

Updated: Feb 12, 2020

We woke up in Trisha & Ben's Sydney apartment and quickly set out for a weekend trip to the South Coast area of Sydney. Our destination, Kangaroo Valley.

Rain, Rain, Rain

Throughout the entire day, there may have been at max a 15 min break from heavy rain. It's a good thing; this is one of the areas impacted by the devastating fire season in Australia. Much of the area surrounding Kangaroo valley was burnt early in the season. It made for a wet road trip.

Driving on the Left

Trisha was kind enough to lend us her car. After work she and Ben are renting a car and will be joining us. I'm writing this post as we wait for them to walk through the door in the next hour...

Coastal Towns

On Trisha's advice, we drove through the scenic Royal National Park and through a series of coastal towns. The whole way down felt a bit like Hudson Valley (New York) had a baby with Santa Cruz (California). The coastline views and food we saw through the driving rain looked like a place we could do some damage.

We made a quick lunch stop in Wollongong, a coastal university city (where we learned yesterday Trisha went!) where I happened to play a tennis tournament in 2002.

Kiama Blowhole

We continued our journey South, with a stop at the Kiama Blowhole. The storm rolling in made the rugged coast angry and spectacular. It fondly reminded us of our second international destination, the Faroe Islands.

Galah birds, a common cockatoos in Australia. Our first time seeing them.
Sometimes you just get lucky with a shot.

It was nice to get out of the car and walk around a bit. With the rain, it ended up being our only activity of the day.

Searching for Sourdough

We turned inland heading for Kangaroo Valley and stopped to pick up some sourdough bread from the Milkwood Bakery. This area is known for good sourdough and we're ready to give it a try. We got lucky, getting the last loaf of the day. It was also a wholemeal loaf (Aussie talk for Whole Wheat), which prompted Sarah to say, "it was meant for us."

This girl loves her sourdough.

AirBnB

We pulled into our AirBnB for the next two nights and unpacked. The girls were particularly helpful and took responsibility of transferring food to the fridge.

Journal Time

After unpacking, the girls when in separate rooms to journal. Paige pulled a stool up to the window to face the backyard. She wanted a nice spot to "watch the world go by...".

After journaling, Sarah and I did some logistics in the background, and the girls settled in for movie (Transylvania 2) - a rare indulgence thus far during our travels.

Home-cooked Family Dinner

We had a delicious home cooked meal which was nice. It's a nice change after a couple months of eating out 3 meals a day.

Trisha & Ben Are Here!

They just arrived, literally as I was writing their names. They were slowed by a bunch of wombats lumbering across the road (no kidding! ;)

Weather forecast is wet, but that won't stop us from having a great time in Kangaroo Valley!
