Home Bound

Final day of our two-week road trip was predominately driving. Just under four hours from Moeraki to Queenstown.

Girls' chalkboard "thank you" message to our AirBnB host, Hugh. He's visited 83 countries!

Before leaving Moeraki we stopped at the lighthouse. It no longer has a lighthouse keeper; it's automated remotely from Wellington. We continued past the lighthouse to check out all the seals basking on the grassy land and rocks along the shore.

We made one pit-stop about half way at St. Bathans, a former gold & cold mining town. It was a bustling township in the late 1880s and many of the original buildings remain. Just aside town is the Blue Lake, created by extensive mining activity. Miners chipped their way through quartz rock for decades. When mining ceased in the 1930s the hole was filled with water. The minerals in the rocks give the lake water its blue color. Although I have to say it didn't look all that blue when we were there.

It was a great spot to enjoy our picnic lunch and a little exploring walk down at the lake. Other than our St. Bathans/Blue Lake lunch stop, and a quick grocery store run, it was an all transit day. The girls listened to an audio book in back while we listened to various podcasts up front. We rolled into our driveway just before 5:00pm, with plenty time to unpack, say hello to our neighbors and park ourselves down for dinner.

That's a wrap on a super South Island "Spring Break" family road trip! The Global Subway is happy & grateful to have been back on the move for a bit :)
