Hello Tasmania

Our travel day started in Sydney with a 5:30am Uber ride to the airport.

Tasmania, here we come!

A few hours later we arrived on the island of Tasmania.

Aussie Animals

Our first stop after the 1.5hr flight south was to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Time to see some of these Down Under animals in person. The Sanctuary was created around 20 years ago when a bankrupt private zoo was taken over. The sanctuary was converted to take care of the existing animals, but also to rehab or become a retirement home for injured animals on the island.

Kangaroo Jump

Seeing a kangaroo jump in person for the first time is one of those, is this real moments? The movement is so graceful and efficient on a large animal it seems fake. Large kangaroos can jump up to 9 meters when they are hauling in the wild!

We spent most of our time feeding and hanging out with these big fellas.

We saw a whole bunch of cool animals. The only bummer was a foreign invasive species in the form of a cruise ship group at the sanctuary.

If you don't have a picture with a Koala, were you ever in Australia?

Rhonda the Wambat

Our favorite was Rhonda. She was rescued when her mother was hit by a car and has been with the sanctuary for almost a year. She was all cuddled up and cute with the zoo keeper, but we learned that like the flip of a switch around 18 months, she'll reject the zoo keeper and become territorial. They do this in the wild as well, rejecting their mother very quickly when it's time to go out on their own. When Rhonda does this, it will be time for her to go back out in the wild.

Curringa Farms

After a grocery store stop to load up on provisions, we headed toward the center of the island to Curringa Farms, our landing spot for the first three nights. It's a gorgeous 750 acre farm in the middle of nowhere. We're staying in one of ten cottages scattered around the farm where we are surrounded by 3,000+ sheep.

Farm Run

Sarah motivated us to get out for a run around the farm. We typically start off together and then I take off for a longer run. At one point I looked back up the hill and saw Sarah on the ridge taking my picture, so I took hers at the same time in return.

Home Cooked Meals

We loaded up at the Supermarket when we arrived. There are no restaurants and just a simple general store about 5 minutes away.

We're looking forward to exploring the farm and enjoying the great views for the next few days...
