We arrived in Reykjavik early morning and had a couple hour layover. Just enough time to stretch our legs, and grab coffee & breakfast.

We’ll visit Copenhagen for a few days after the Faroe Islands, and have plans to connect there with Jasmine, one of Sadie’s closest friends from New York City, who moved to Switzerland earlier this year. I spoke with Jasmine’s Mom while we were at the Reykjavik airport to make some initial plans for our Copenhagen meet-up. Unbeknownst to me, Jasmine’s maternal grandmother grew up on the Faroe Islands, and Jasmine’s Mom grew up spending her Summers in Faroe. It made me even more curious & excited to experience the Faroe Islands! Laila graciously passed along tips from one of her (many) cousins who still resides in Faroe & is involved in the local tourism industry.

Our flight from Reykjavik to Vagar, Faroe Islands was a short one. Excited to be in our first new-to-all-of-us country!

First official sights of Faroe Islands!

After collecting our rental car we headed straight to nearby Múlafossur waterfall, which was definitely worth a stop.

We walked ahead to the village of Gásadalur to scarf down a quick lunch of fish stew and open-faced salmon/shrimp sandwiches at Cafe Fjorooy (the only game in town). Paige literally fell asleep while waiting for the food!!

Our home base to explore Faroe is an AirBnB outside Torshavn, Faroe’s largest city (population ~13,000). It was about an hour's drive from lunch to our AirBnB. About two minutes into the drive the girls were asleep. Doug & I were exhausted as well, so we pulled into a parking lot, locked the car, and set a timer. 40 glorious minutes later we woke up from what felt like 8 hours sleep. Family power nap! We were ready to carry on :)

Just before we arrived at our Torshavn AirBnB we stopped at a local grocery store to stock up for the week. We had read that there are very few restaurants on the islands, and that our best bet was to pack picnic lunches and cook dinner at home. Sounded great to us.

Our farm house rental was about 5 minutes drive outside Torshavn, but it felt like a world away. Surprising how rural it can get, so quickly. We were surrounded by fields of grass & hay, and there were several sheep grazing just feet outside our door. Pure bliss.

Doug whipped up a yummy chicken taco dinner. Middle picture below is of Doug & Paige's feet as they cook away; slippers on loan from our rental house :) After dinner we cozied up to tea and biscuits (Digestive dark chocolate biscuits, a favorite of Doug’s from his days on the international Tennis circuit). Lovely way to end our travel day. Ready to crash and start our Faroe exploring in the morning!

Sadie placed a pin in New York City to mark our home city on the rental house guest map. We were the first from the US!
