Teles family is here!
We woke up to the moment we'd been highly anticipating for the week . . . our Portuguese hosts & good friends, the Teles family, was here! Last time we saw each other was the final day of school in NYC at the end of June. What a treat to reunite in their Portugal homeland!
The Teles family is a special bunch with a very generous spirit. They always seem to be hosting family or friends, or helping folks out. With four daughters, they are a close-knit family & have a fun, welcoming energy about them.
The moment we told them of our plans to travel for a year, they immediately insisted we include Portugal as a destination! Their passion for their home country is contagious, and we very happily obliged and made Portugal - made even more special by their generous offer to stay in their Lisbon apartment - one of our first stops. We'd have a great stretch in Portugal on our own, but we were super pumped that we could finally spend some time here all together! This was one of our final NYC hang-outs, scheming for Portugal fun!
Breakfast of Champions
All of us reunited in Lisbon, Nuno & Doug split off to stock up on pastries and breakfast yummies from their favorite local spot. In true Nuno form, he "made" his own parking spot, humorously parking on the sidewalk out front :)
We were 11 people in total for the day: Our family (4) + Teles family (6) + Tai (a Danish friend of theirs from NYC who was flying back to the States later that evening, I'm totally spelling his name incorrectly btw). A perfect example of them helping out their community when they can, taking Tai in for the day :)
All 11 of us piled into one car to journey a few blocks to get the second car for our daytrip. It took some creative maneuvering, but we all fit into the minivan! A memorable, laugh-enduring ride, for sure:)
First stop: Cascais
We stopped off for a short while in Cascais, a beach town under an hour West of Lisbon. The girls enjoyed a little dip in the ocean.
The Main Event: Bar do Guincho
Our ultimate destination was lunch at Bar do Guincho, one of the Teles family's favorite spots. We rolled up to a massive dirt parking lot and walked a ways back to reveal a beautiful terrace overlooking Guincho Beach. Even with the beach clouded over with fog & mist, the spot was nothing short of glorious. Combine the setting with good friends, delicious food and cheer, and you have a HAPPY PLACE! Sheer bliss. The moments you just want to bottle up.
Heartfelt thanks to Nuno, Patricia & girls for sharing their favorite Bar do Guincho with us! We hope to repeat again soon with y'all!
