Today we hit up Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay, just near its iconic luxury Marina Bay Sands hotel.
First we did a productive morning school session at the American Club Children’s Library space. I had a 12:00pm physio appointment for my back (staying proactive & learning how to prevent discomfort/injury!) just next door to the American Club.
Hawker Lunch for Doug & the Girls
While I was getting the painfully productive “massage”, Doug & the girls went to the famous Maxwell Hawker center for lunch. Hawker centers are basically large food courts with stalls around a perimeter serving a variety of local and international dishes. I hopped on a city bus (love local public transport!) and enjoyed an easy 25 minute bus ride to Gardens by the Bay. The bus conveniently dropped me off right in front of the Sands hotel. It’s dizzying to look up at that monster building!
Doug & girls arrived via Grab (local version of Uber). They were dropped off in a different area, so it took me a bit of time to find them. When I spotted them, Paige came running up with a huge grin on her face, so happy to see me! It’s funny . . . we spend SO much time together on this trip. It's amusing/endearing how much I enjoyed being reunited with them - and likewise them seeing me again - especially given how much time we spend together as it is. My heart was happy with those big hugs & smiles :) They told me all about their lunch and kindly brought me some noodles to scarf down for my own lunch.
Giddy for the Gardens
Tickets in hand, we then ventured over to two of the main attractions of Gardens by the Bay: the Cloud Forrest and the Flower Dome. We soaked up the view of the quintessential Singapore skyline spot, the Marina Bay Sands hotel.
We hit up the Cloud Forrest first, an impressive glass dome housing a massive tropical rain forest of sorts & a huge waterfall. There was green everywhere and loads of varieties of colorful, unique flowers. We leisurely wound around the gardens, taking in all the beauty.
The adjacent Flower Dome housed several different genres of plants & flowers. My favorite was the Succulent Gardens area. Give me a succulent garden any day, and I’m a happy camper! The girls were in one of their silly moods. Doug pointed out that it’d been awhile since they had one of these full-on silly, giggling fits with each other (aka Witching Hour), so we let them just walk along in their silly trance and enjoy the gardens at their own pace. There was a special exhibit to celebrate The girls liked the Flower Dome better, but Doug & I were firmly in the Cloud Forrest camp.
Afterwards we walked back towards Marina Bay Sands to catch the MRT (subway) back “home”. We walked beneath the Supertree Grove and along the Dragonfly Bridge, all the while enjoying the beautiful views all around. Singapore has done an impressive job of marrying city with greenscape, making for really gorgeous areas & views.
Gardens by the Bay was a great way to spend a beautiful, sunny & breezy afternoon. We’d intended to do it both of the two days prior, but always ran out of time for some reason or another. Really glad we finally got there!
