Gjógv: Wildflowers & Pinch Me Views

Updated: Aug 18, 2019

We spent virtually all day in the village of Gjógv on the northeast tip of Eysturoy island. Its named after a 200-meter long sea-filled gorge that runs north to the sea from the village.

Free Solo

En route to Gjógv, we pulled over briefly to see some interesting rock formations outside the small village of Eioi. Doug free solo-ed a (shockingly short) rock :)

The rock in all its glory :)

Gjogv

Gjógv has one little cafe that sits at the base of a hiking trail, with the namesake gorge down the below. We scarfed down an unimpressive lunch from the cafe and then set out on the hiking trail.

Flowers for Sale

We lucked out with a gorgeous weather day and the girls were excited to be hiking, both of which always makes for a more pleasurable hike :) The girls were bouncing along, collecting wild flowers to make bouquets. According to Paige, they would be selling them later. I think they were inspired by two local girls who were selling painted rocks at the trail head.

Your Turn

With the girls happily focused on their flower mission, Doug & I took turns hiking up to the very top of the trail. The views were nothing less than majestic. Green grass, rolling hills & cliffs, grazing sheep and seas that opened up to views of other Faroe islands as far as the eye could see. It really felt otherworldly to be up top and take it all in.

Family peak; from here Doug & I took turns to check out higher grounds

It's easy to be motivated on the hiking trail, with beautiful views like these all around!

Gorge of Gjógv

Award for Most Unique Playground

After the hike we checked out the gorge (lovely, see below) and then walked through town to hit up a water play area we had passed on our way in. There was a little stream that opened up into a pond of sorts. Plastic barrels had been split in half & put together with plywood to form mini boats, and wooden planks were used for oars.

Our girls precariously made their way into the boats, trying hard to keep their balance & not topple over into the water. The local kiddos, on the other hand, practically jumped into the boats without a thought. If it weren’t already obvious that we were tourists, the way our girls embarked the boats would have given it away in an instant :) Several local families were gathered at the pond. Some had even brought a coffee pot and snacks from home. Side note: They seem to love their chocolate/candy bars and ice cream here, no matter the time of day.

Doug & I couldn’t resist the opportunity to hop aboard a boat ourselves; it's not every day that you come upon such a unique experience! Paige ended up falling into the water as she was popping out of a boat. Surprisingly it didn’t phase her and she had a huge smile on her face.

We all agreed this was one of the coolest play spaces we’d ever experienced!

Shoes back on, we headed back to our farm house outside Tórshavn and had a simple hot dog dinner.
