Hilkka has been a tremendously gracious host during our 17 days based in Austria. Our home base has been her beautiful home in Saint Lorenzen. It's located in the middle of the Styrian Region, which has been our launching point for exploring in every direction.

"Euro" Meals

The Euros love their long lunches; the Austrians are no different. No rushing...3 courses and a nice bottle of wine. We enjoyed many Euro breakfasts (Hilkka would pick up fresh bread from the local bakery in the mornings), lunches and dinners during out stay.

"Euro-lunch" in action!

Getting Fishy

On our last afternoon Hilkka invited us to a favorite restaurant for a Euro lunch. Kulmer Fisch has been open since 1722. They're well known in Austria as one of the premier restaurants serving salmon-trout from the river and their farm across the street.

We Need a Label

As the meal unfolded, it was so good that we decided that we need a label for those special spots we find during our adventure - our own Michelin Star rating of sorts. We'll be thinking about a proper label or name for restaurants like these. Stay tuned ...

Getting soupy. A fish curry soup and a tomato soup Sadie whispered to me while eating..."it's the best I've ever had!"

Need Dessert, Will Travel

After wrapping up our feast, we drove to a local guesthouse/restaurant, Alpengasthof Schanzin, in the mountains for dessert. Schoko personally knows the chef/owner so we were in good hands. We indulged on some "Snow White Cake" (a poppy seed cake) and a blueberry strudel, dripping with whipped cream and ice cream.

Thank You Hilkka

A huge thank you for taking us in and sharing the magic of Austria with us!
