Definitely *Not* Locals

Beautiful weather + final day with rental car = prime beach day trip conditions!

Where Should We Go?

The night before we did some research on beaches within striking distance of Lisbon. There were surprisingly many options! We ultimately opted for Praia da Figueirinha, about an hour Southeast of the city. The beach sits below a rocky bluff and is a popular spot with locals.

Crowds Galore

The day we went was a national holiday (Assumption Day) so the beaches were extra teeming with people. The beach parking lot was full so Doug kindly dropped me & the girls off while he doubled back down the main (only) road to find a spot. 45 minutes later (including a 30-minute walk from the spot he found), Doug joined us :)

We got one of the last straw umbrella & lounge chair rental set-ups on the beach. The sun was fierce, so the shade was key. The water was brisk but a welcome refresher from the midday heat. We took a long walk down the beach to explore all the little nooks & crannies. Gorgeous!

Conservative Approach to Sun Protection

It’s worth mentioning that we looked NOTHING like the locals, who made up 99% of the beach goers. All four of us were practically head-to-toe in sun protection . . . long-sleeved rash guards, large-brimmed sun hats, regular sunscreen application to our fair skin. You get the gist :) We sat in stark contrast to the Portuguese with their tanned skin and relatively skimpy bathing suits. Our get-up attracted quite a few looks & giggles along the way. Especially Sadie’s long sleeve, long pants bathing mermaid suit :) Hard to blame them. But it worked! We left a full day at the beach with no sun burns, so that’s success.

A beautiful beach day trip! The girls were in heaven all day. They love playing in the sand and water. Bonus: They got a popsicle from the beachside cabana cafe, so that made the day even more epic for them. Thanks Praia da Figueirinha!
