Leading up to our time in Australia, we were already aware that Aussies shorten quite a few of their words and use lots of slang. They love nicknames for people and things! We kept a short list of some of our favorites over the past four weeks traipsing about Australia:

  • Pluggers/thongs: flip flops

  • Toastie: grilled sandwich

  • Fair Dinkum: for real/authentic (and for real?)

  • Air biscuit: toot

  • Timbuktu: going a far way away

  • Esky: cooler (bring your own esky)

  • Rug Up: cozy up

  • Have tea: eat dinner

  • Stubby holder: beer cozy (to keep beer cold)

  • Mozzie: mosquitos

  • Avo: avocado (Aussies LOVE their avos!)

  • Arvo: afternoon (have a good arvo)

  • Macas: macadamia nuts

  • Piggly wiggly: on & off (like the weather)

  • Pines: pineapples

  • Brekky: breakfast

  • Bush: countryside

  • Chook: chicken

  • Good on ya: good work/good job

  • Heaps: lots, many
