First Full Day in Faroe

Updated: Aug 12, 2019

Still making up for lost sleep on the overnight flight, we let ourselves wake up leisurely our first full day in the Faroe Islands.

First Hike in the Books

We were booked on an early afternoon boat cruise, and decided to use the morning to go on a hike nearby. We drove about 20 minutes South along the coast, to Kirkjubøur, the southernmost village on Streymoy island. We knew we had about 30 minutes to spare before we’d have to make the drive to the boat tour, so we hustled our way up a hiking path. The girls were incredibly happy & engaged on the hike, motivated/rewarded by the gorgeous views all around us. There was a rock tower towards the top of the trail. We each added a rock and then made our way back down to our car.

First Horse Sighting!

There was a beautiful horse that we spotted near the road. The girls were admiring the horse from above on the hike, and Paige was begging to get a closer look. We walked down the road and stopped a few feet from the horse. Paige was elated to be that close to the horse, and even got a chance to pet it. She named it “Lily” after her close NYC friend. They went to horse camp together last Summer and share a love for horses :) Not five minutes after we left and Paige was already asking if we could go back and visit Lily the Horse again.

Gorgeous Water Views

Our Vestmanna Bird Cliffs boat cruise left at 2:00pm. Restaurants/cafes are few & far between on the Faroe Islands, so we had planned in advance & packed a lunch. We scarfed it down as the boat departed.

There was quite a bit of fog that morning, so the Captain told us that we would be venturing North instead of the usual South, for better visibility. We set out and not before long, we were cruising alongside gorgeous cliffs, weaving through caves, and seeing puffins & sea birds galore! Such a treat to see so many puffins! They breed in the Faroe Islands for a short window of time each Summer, and then head out to open sea for the balance of the year.

Faroe Fisherman at Sea

On the return leg of our trip, we came upon a local fisherman (whose boat was swarming with gulls). Our boat pulled up alongside him. He showed us gawking tourists all the fish he’d caught up to that point and reeled in a fish before our eyes, promptly slicing its neck. Man, I’d love to know more of that guy's story.

Town of Torshavn

After the cruise we made our way back to Torshavn, the largest city of all the Faroe Islands. We explored Torshavn by foot and were particularly fond of its old town, Tinganes, and its wooden grass thatched roofs and cozy restaurants. We made a pit-stop at Brell Cafe (reco from Brooklyn, NY friends Shannon & Greg) for a round of sour beer (S&D) and Go Fish card game (P&S). The cafe had Wifi (which our farm house doesn’t), so spent some time fixated on our screen, cleaning up our pictures and posting a few things online.

Heated game of Go Fish. Inspired by the Faroe fisherman we saw?!

Day one in Faroe is a wrap!

Doug whipped up a batch of pasta for dinner back at the house while the girls tried to cajole our three neighboring sheep over to the fence :)
