2,500 Year Old Theater

I grew up going to the occasional concert at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA.

It was built in 1986.

Today we visited the Ancient Theater of Epidaurus.

It was build in the 4th Century BC.

We left our AirBnB late morning, tracked down some sunscreen (we were all out) and drove 30 minutes to visit the theater.

Some Fun Facts (as Paige & Sadie call them):

  • Constructed at the end of the 4th century BC

  • Maximum capacity of 13,000 to 14,000 spectators

  • Greeks believed that observing dramatic shows had positive mental & physical health benefits, even to the point of helping heal.

  • Considered to be the best acoustics of any Greek theater.

  • They still have live performances in July & August.

At the center of the theater, there was a stone marking the center and focal point for acoustics. There were a couple of tour guides who were speaking at normal conversational levels, dropping coins on the stone to showcase the sound. We could only imagine what it must sound like during a performance and with a full house.

Cheap seats.

Our multi-generational crew fully agreed - the theater was a very cool and unique spot to visit.

Brown bag lunching.

Beach at Tolo

After eating brown-bagged picnic lunch at the amphitheater, it was time to spend some time in the Mediterranean Sea on a warm day. Our AirBnB hosts had recommended Tolo Beach, just a quick 15 minute drive from our house.

The crystal clear water was beautiful and the sandy beach extended out shallow for 100+ feet, so Paige and Sadie were loving it. Grammy & Gramps were loving their first dip in the Mediterranean as well. Sarah went for a quick run & joined us in the beautiful water afterwards.

Real Estate Developers?

The sandy beach itself was nothing spectacular, but the gorgeous water and natural surrounding areas were beautiful. In such a pristine place, it was strange to see a large number of waterfront hotels and developments 1/2 finished or abandoned.

Night in Nafplio

After wrapping up a super afternoon at the beach, we headed back into Nafplio for dinner and strolled the town at night. We even enjoyed some gelato, courtesy of Grammy & Gramps!
